ESPN is reporting that later on today Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans will win the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award. While I have occasionally seen highlights of Evans on Sportscenter and remember him well from his days at Memphis, I was shocked to see how good of a season this guy has put up (a pretty badass photo huh?)
Evans has averaged 20.1 points, 5.8 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game (due largely to his 6’11” wingspan) in his rookie season. Talk about having an impact immediately — and he’s only 20 years old. Averaging 20 points per game in the NBA is incredibly difficult — take a look at the names of the players who averaged 20+ points per game this season.
In seems to me that Evans has been received with literally ZERO hype considering the numbers he has put up. Sure he plays in Sacramento, sure they were a dismal 7-34 on the road this year, sure he was given a chance to play since day one. Although he had few critics he did manage to silence the concerns over his free throw shooting, averaging 75% at the line this year. This guy has gotten no hype this year, but I’d look for him to get a hell of a lot more in the future.
