I’ve got 5 minutes, and there’s a lot to report on today so we’ll keep it brief. Three things you need to know…..
1) If you are Boston-based, the NBA Finals start tonight at 9:00pm EST, followed by Harpoon Fest Friday and Saturday. Get after it.
2) Detroit Tiger’s pitcher Armando Galarraga was cheated out of a perfect game with, get this, 2 outs in the 9th inning last night when the first base umpire called a runner safe who was out by more than a step. Worst of all, Galarraga was covering first base on the play and knew that the runner was in fact out. MLB should be able to review this play and credit Galarraga with a perfect game. Regardless the umpire stole what would likely be the defining moment of his career from him — and the opportunity to celebrate on-field with his teammates. I usually take it easy on refs/umps — mistakes happen — but you’d think the ump would have been on his game knowing there was 2 outs in the 9th with a perfect game on the line. He had a perfect look at the play and simply blew it. You’ve got to be better than that.
3) Today is a bittersweet day. Ken Griffey Jr. announced his retirement from baseball yesterday at the age of 40 — finishing his career with 630 home runs and not one musing of steroid use. This guy very likely is the best player of my generation. An athlete of this caliber retiring feels similar to losing somebody — you simply can’t watch them perform anymore. You need to appreciate these special athletes while you get the opportunity to watch them play. I don’t care if he had taken to sleeping in the dugout. I don’t care if he was injury plagued for a few seasons. He invented the craft of robbing home runs in center field, pulling the ball back into play from over the wall. Easily the sexiest swing ever.
