This is extremely tough, Rock is very tricky as everything from Motorhead to the Beatles is Rock..but off the top of my head im gonna throw out:
White Room-Cream, Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen, Everlong-Foo fighters, Basket Case- Green Day, a day in the life- Beatles (very tough call I like manyy beatles songs but i figured this had more of a rock feel than Something or Let it be) there are plenty more but ill begin with those

Green Day will not make this list. That is a promise.

a top 20 rock song may certainly be pushing it for any green day song but Dookie was a classic album..I had to get my aunt to buy it for me and hide it cause my mom wouldnt take me to get it or allow me to listen to it…
other than that the rest of their stuff is pretty much garbage

Stairway to Heaven – Led Zeppelin. Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana. All Along the Watchtower – Jimi Hendrix. Wish You Were Here – Pink Floyd. Scar Tissue – Red Hot Chili Peppers. Dream On- Aerosmith. You Can’t Always Get What You Want – Rolling Stones. The Weight – The Band. Sweet Child O’ Mine – Guns ‘N’ Roses. Any Beatles song you want can be on the list. Piano Man – Billy Joel. Rock N Roll All Night – Kiss. Just to name a few.

    • Excellent, thanks for the submissions. You started out on fire, then your recommendations died out a bit, but you’re definitely on the right track with several of those I think.

The peppers are not top 20 material, but the rest are pretty good.

Any CCR likely to make this list?

    a. rab made me think of another good one..Only the good die young or Scenes from an italian restaurant- Billy Joel

For the Stones, I would put Satisfaction or Sympathy for the Devil ahead of YCAGWYW. Maybe even Brown Sugar. There has to be at least one Beatles song in the top 20 (and there are MANY to choose from). I can definitely agree with Stairway to Heaven, Bohemian Rhapsody and Dream on as top 20s. Hendrix, I would go with Purple Haze. Kiss…I prefer Dr. Love, but several are great songs. Van Halen has to make the list…Jump, Panama…hell, even Ice Cream Man! The Doors…Riders on the Storm, LA Woman, The End, tons of them! Baba O’Reily by The Who. U2 – Desire. Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd.

Just because a song is modern does not mean it does not belong on the list. Nirvana and Elvis Presley reformed Rock n Roll. It would be disrespectful to leave them off the top 20 list (Ask Weezer…they changed their sound because of Nirvana). So, Sweet Child of Mine and Jailhouse Rock.

What is the scope on Rock n Roll? CCR ? Sinatra? Pop music (a la Michael Jackson)? Just say no to Neil Diamond.

    • Torin D

I am an idiot. Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit. GNR – Sweet Child of Mine. Carry on.

    • Thank god you said “just say no to Neil Diamond.” I couldn’t agree more, and for the most track I think your suggestions are right on track. For Hendrix, I’d go with All Along the Watch Tower though. I’d say Sinatra and Michael Jackson don’t qualify, but CCR does for sure.

Oh, I forgot Steppenwolf – Born to be Wild…I Wanna Be Sedated – The Ramones…London Calling – The Clash.

Hendrix’s “Little Wing” is his best song, and I have a strong argument for that.
