Tiger Woods 2011 Predictions

Tiger Woods 2011 Predictions

No doubt about it, Tiger Woods had a wild 2010. He didn’t win a golf tournament, he lost his golden boy aura, and despite his graphic text messages and infidelity, he managed to elude the villianized image that enveloped Lebron James for merely announcing that he was taking his talents to South Beach. Tiger has since built a new house, been seen at countless sporting events, and although no one noticed he would have won a golf tournament a few weeks back had it not been for a couple of miraculous putts by Graeme McDowell. Oh yea, and he topped it all of with a healthy dose of “sex rehab.” All of this leads me to wonder — What does 2011 have in store for Tiger?

Let’s start with the timing of this post; the 2011 PGA Tour season kicks off January 3-9 in Hawaii at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions (previously known as the Mercedes Championship — talk about downgrading). This is an invitation only event for tournament winners from 2010, meaning this is the first year that Tiger has not been invited in over a decade. You likely won’t even see Tiger in action until February, but I can assure you of one thing:

Now that Tiger is divorced, he’s going to do what he wants to do. And although you think that might be some potent cocktail of, well, cocktail waitresses, I can assure you that’s not Tiger’s main concern. Tiger wants to practice. Tiger wants to be the best golfer ever. And that means winning majors. End of story.

So will he succeed in 2011 or has he lost his game and his nerve? I think his loss to Graeme McDowell was telling enough — the game is in there. So you’re hearing it here and now, before the PGA Tour season begins — Tiger Woods will win at least 5 tournaments, including at least 1 major in 2011. My guess is that Tiger will win the Masters at Augusta, thus silencing his critics, completing his “comeback,” and announcing loud and clear to players on tour that things have not changed all that much.

That said, I do think that you’ll see other tour players take shots at Tiger in the media that much more. His game unchanged, I think that criticism becomes a lot easier for these guys now that Tiger’s golden boy image is deceased. As for Tiger’s response? He’ll kick their butts as usual. Trust me on this one.

The Greatest Golf Picture Ever

The Best Golf Photo Ever

I think so. This happened in the Ryder Cup when Tiger flat out flubbed a shot into a reporter’s camera. This one will become very famous.

2010 Ryder Cup Starts Today

2010 Ryder Cup

The 2010 Ryder Cup begins today at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales. If you don’t know much about the Ryder Cup, it is golf’s biggest team format event, pitting the best players from Europe against the best players from the States. The bi-annual tournament was won by the American’s in 2008, although the US hasn’t won on European soil in 17 years.

While the European team may have several players that aren’t exactly household names — Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, and Ross Fisher, just to name a few — this is by far one of the strongest European teams in recent years. I hate to be unpatriotic, but my prediction is that the US will get crushed. Sure, Tiger isn’t playing his best, but I bet you he plays well. He won’t be the problem.

The format of the event is a bit screwy — today and tomorrow you will see best ball and alternate shot formats, followed up by head to head singles matches on Sunday. This is far and away golf’s most pressure packed event, and one of the most intense events in all of sport. If the matches get close, I’d definitely recommend tuning in on Sunday.

Shhhhh…..Tiger Woods is Leading a Golf Tournament

Tiger Woods

Don’t talk too loudly now, but as of this morning Tiger Woods is leading a golf tournament on the PGA Tour — The Barclays tournament. He is 3-under par through 14 holes and one shot up on the field. This took him exactly 2 days after his divorce was finalized — Tigers must move on, quickly.

I wouldn’t worry though — he’ll blow it.

Tiger Woods Lips Out on Marriage, Divorces Elin Nordegren

Tiger Woods Elin Nordegren

Yesterday was a long day in coming, nearly 8-months since Tiger Woods crashed his car after his wife likely chased him out of the house with a golf club. At long last, Tiger and his wife Elin Nordegren have divorced.

When news of Woods’ infidelity first emerged, I was very skeptical that a divorce would ever happen. But when the rampant details of Woods’ double life began to emerge and was subsequently smeared by the media throughout the globe, a divorce soon became inevitable. So what does this divorce mean? What is its relevance? As someone who has long been a Tiger fan, and continues to be despite his affairs, here’s how I see it.

1) The first major question everyone has is what was the divorce settlement? Was there a pre-nup? How much is Elin getting? These questions are pretty foolish, and frankly, who cares? If there was not a pre-nup and Tiger was acting the way that he did, then he deserves to lose however many hundreds of millions of dollars. The man is a billionaire, so both parties will be more than comfortable, needless to say.

2) While Tiger has been villianized by many, both he and Elin are intelligent enough people to know that ultimately it’s all about the kids. Few athletes in the history of sport have talked more frequently, lovingly, and openly about their relationships with their parents as Woods has. Whether it’s speaking of his mother’s Buddhist influences of his “pop’s” regimented approach to developing Tiger’s mental game, Woods has continually credited his parents and the influences they have had on him. He wants to be the same sort of father for his children, which unfortunately for him, he already screwed up. But I can guarantee that the public will see him taking care of and spending time with his children. They are young enough that they will be fine.

3) So what does this mean for Tiger’s golf game? Everything. This season was a complete wash for Woods, as he was rehabing his personal life in an attempt to save his marriage rather than his golf game. Tiger will now have plenty of time to focus on his game, rededicate himself to practicing, and ultimately return to the winner’s circle. When will this happen? Let’s just say that Tiger will win multiple tournaments next year and will go on to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major championships. From here on out Tiger will be either spending time with his kids or working on his golf game. That’s about it.

So with those questions answered, here is the question nobody is asking yet — When will Tiger start dating again? Who will the lucky lady be? Jennifer Aniston? Lady Gaga? I bet it doesn’t happen anytime soon — but what happens in Vegas,……

Can Tiger Woods Get His Groove Back?

Tiger Woods

The 2010 World Golf Championships Bridgestone tournament starts today at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio — with Tiger Woods in the field. Tiger has won this tournament more than any other — he has an astonishing seven wins in this event. And, in the ten starts Tiger has had in this event, when he hasn’t won he has finished T2, 4, and T4. The man flat-out owns this tournament.

But get this — Tiger is 79th on the PGA Tour money list this year. That’s almost laughable. He hasn’t won a single tournament, has a 71.2 scoring average, and only has 2 top tens. In other words, Tiger Woods has sucked this year.

As I wrote this headline, I had an epiphany of sorts — “groove” really refers more to Tiger’s swing, finding the elusive on-plane slot in the swing, and the technical aspects of Tiger’s golf game. He hasn’t done that yet, but he’ll get there. He’s not far off. But what Tiger really needs back is his “swag” — it seems to have all but disappeared.

So what exactly is “swag?” Is it quantifiable?

Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines “swagger” as: “Conducting oneself in an arrogant or superciliously pompous manner; especially : to walk with an air of overbearing self-confidence.”

Moving on to a slightly more credible source, Urban dictionary defines “swag” as: “The way in which you carry yourself. Swag is made up of your overall confidence, style, and demeanor. Swag can also be expanded to be the reputation of your overall swagger. You gain swag, or “Swag up”, by performing swag worthy actions that improve this perception. A person can also “swag down,” by being an overall pussy and garnering negative swag for their actions. Swag is a subtle thing that many strive to gain but few actually attain. It is reserved for the most swagalicious of people. Swag can also be quantified, with point systems existing in some circles of friends.”

“I got with two girls last night”
“Awesome dude, that’s some swag”
“I think one of them was my sister though…”
“Negative swag”

I personally like to credit rapper TI with introducing me to “swag” — he drops the word about 100 times on his Paper Trail album. The moral of the “swag” story is this — Tiger used to have it, but he no longer does. It’s evident in his interviews, it’s evident in his on-course body language. Tiger used to literally win tournaments just by walking into locker rooms. Other players would psych themselves out, and Tiger would cruise to victory. This is well documented, with big name players such as Ernie Els admitting that they fell victim to Tiger’s swag. In retrospect, maybe Tiger’s swag didn’t have much to do with his golf game. Maybe it came from his millions of dollars, his Swedish bikini model wife, and his onslaught of other sexual conquests.

Whatever its source, Tiger needs to find a way to get his swag back. He simply is not intimidating players as he was before. So how does he do that? I’m not sure if he can, but getting back in the winner’s circle this week would sure help.
